2023 Audi SQ5 / SQ5 Sportback Review, Pricing, and Specs


Overview

Performance luxury SUVs like the 2023 Audi SQ5 and SQ5 Sportback provide an easy way to celebrate your car enthusiast roots when your lifestyle evolves to include the traditional trappings of adulthood. Essentially a hot-rodded version of the regular Q5 SUV, the SQ5 wears a snazzier wardrobe and packs a turbocharged V-6 engine under hood that makes a stout 354 horsepower. Its suspension has been tweaked for sportier handling, but rivals such as the BMW X3 M, Porsche Macan, and Mercedes-AMG GLC-class all push this performance SUV formula farther with sharper handling and punchier acceleration. If your goal is to enjoy a twisty road while keeping the kiddies asleep in the back, though, the soft-riding SQ5 is probably the one to have. Inside, Audi aims for maximum impact with a host of technology and luxury features, including an available digital gauge display, rich leather, and popular driver-assistance features.

What’s New for 2023?

Adaptive cruise control is standard on all SQ5 models starting this year, and the mid-range Premium Plus trim now includes a Bang and Olufsen stereo system. Chronos Gray is a new color for the SQ5’s exterior and replaces last year’s Quantum Gray color.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We’d go with the Premium Plus trim, but we’ll let you decide if the regular squareback SQ5 or the fastback SQ5 Sportback is for you. This mid-range model comes standard with plenty of luxury features, including a Bang and Olufsen stereo system, a heated steering wheel, a lane-keeping assist feature, and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital gauge display.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The SQ5 keeps things simple with one powertrain. Audi’s throaty turbocharged V-6 makes good power, and standard Quattro all-wheel drive puts that power to the road. This dynamic duo is let down occasionally by its eight-speed automatic transmission, which can be slow to change gears and sometimes serves up syrupy shifts. The SQ5’s 5.1-second zero-to-60-mph run is objectively quick, but it’s not nearly as speedy as the 4.5-second effort of the GLC43. With its accurate, firm steering, there’s fun to be had tossing the SQ5 through the twisties. Even entry-level SQ5s have a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system that can direct up to 85 percent of the available torque to the rear wheels. The SQ5’s ride is compliant and comfortable—a compliment in this class—but a little too soft for aggressive performance driving. We suspect that most buyers in this segment would be perfectly happy with the SQ5’s straight-line speed and its pothole-vanquishing ride, but uncompromising drivers should consider the 10Best-winning Porsche Macan.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The SQ5’s EPA fuel-economy ratings aren’t particularly impressive, but most competitors have similar numbers. Also, the SQ5 outperformed said numbers in our real-world highway fuel-economy test. Our Prestige test vehicle delivered an impressive 28 mpg highway over the course of 200 miles at a steady 75 mph, outpacing even the Cadillac XT5 which offers nowhere near the same amount of performance as the Audi. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The SQ5’s exterior may be a little dull, unless you opt for the sexier Sportback body style. But inside, both come standard with sculpted sport seats and their available quilted-leather coverings leave no doubt as to this crossover’s upscale intentions. Heated, power-adjustable front seats are standard in every SQ5, as are three-zone automatic climate control and Audi’s practical, attractive design. Other comforts will cost extra and can include heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and additional leather trim for the front row. We fit the same six carry-on boxes into the SQ5’s 27-cubic-foot cargo area as we did in the Macan’s 18-cubic-foot luggage compartment. Call that an impressive result for the Macan or a disappointing one for the SQ5, but either way, it puts the Audi near the bottom of its class for real-world carrying capability. The Sportback variant reduces storage space behind the rear seats by 3 cubes (25 total), and folding them flat opens up 52 cubes of cargo volume.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The SQ5’s standard infotainment offerings include two USB ports, three 12-volt outlets, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. By choosing the mid-range Premium Plus or the top Prestige version, drivers can enjoy premium features such as a Wi-Fi hotspot and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital gauge display. Among other tricks, this upgrade to the gauge-cluster display provides a satellite street view of the directions from the MMI’s navigation system, so drivers never need to guess whether they’re on the right track. This is a little gimmicky in a world where nearly everyone’s pocket holds a GPS-equipped smartphone, but it’s a trick that (for now) places Audi a cut above the competition. Added USB ports for back-seat passengers would be welcome.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Audi provides several collision-avoidance technologies as standard in this model, with more driver-assistance features available to those who are willing to pay for them. GM Doubling the Number of Roads That Work with Super Cruise


  • GM will soon double the number of roads in Canada and the U.S. that work with its Super Cruise hands-free driver-assist system.
  • The newest GM vehicles with the Vehicle Intelligence Platform (VIP) will be the first ones to get the no-cost, over-the-air update later this year.
  • The eligible 2022 models include the Cadillac CT4, CT5, Escalade, and Lyriq; the GMC Hummer EV and Sierra 1500; and the Silverado 1500—although the chip shortage means it may not be available on every vehicle it’s intended for right now.

There will soon be a lot more roads in the United States and Canada that work with Super Cruise. That’s because GM announced today that later this year it’ll be doubling the number of roadways that work with its hands-free driver-assist system.

The current network includes about 200,000 miles of mapped divided highways. The plan to double its size means that drivers will be able to travel hands-free on over 400,000 miles of roads throughout the two countries.

What’s even more notable is that GM says the expansion won’t continue to be limited to the interstate. The updated Super Cruise will be operational on a combination of divided and undivided state and federal roads. Among the most iconic of the new routes are the Pacific Coast Highway (California Route 1), the Overseas Highway (U.S. Route 1), and the Mother Road (U.S. Route 66).

The company also said that new vehicles with its Vehicle Intelligence Platform (VIP) that are already equipped with Super Cruise will be the first to benefit from the expansion. The list of 2022 models that are eligible for the full update includes the Cadillac CT4, CT5, and Escalade; the Chevy Silverado 1500; the GMC Hummer EV and Sierra 1500. They’ll just have to receive an over-the-air update at no additional cost, which will be available later this year.

Meanwhile, models such as the Cadillac CT6 sedan (now defunct) and XT6 SUV as well as the Chevy Bolt EUV, which feature the company’s Global A platform, are also eligible for the upgrade, but a GM spokesperson told Car and Driver that they’ll “receive a smaller portion of the expansion.”

Back in May, we learned that the 2023 Chevy Suburban and Tahoe will be getting Super Cruise. The ’23 GMC Yukon and Cadillac Lyriq also have the hands-free system. However, we’re still unsure how the semiconductor shortage could affect Super Cruise’s availability or how it might affect other new models that look to add it.

2023 Genesis G90 Sees Big Price Bump, Still Undercuts S-Class


  • Genesis has released pricing information for the 2023 G90. There’s a sizable increase in starting price for the Korean luxury brand’s full-size sedan.
  • The G90 will start at $89,495, while opting for the 48-volt hybrid system with an electric supercharger will open at $99,795.

    Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis first launched its flagship G90 sedan in 2017, providing a comfortable interior, smooth ride, and quiet powertrain at a price that vastly undercut the full-size sedans from other luxury marques like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Now Genesis has revealed pricing for the second-generation model, and while the 2023 G90 is substantially more expensive than its predecessor, it still manages to look like a bargain next to the pricey Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW 7-series.

    The 2023 Genesis G90 3.5T AWD will start at $89,495 and arrives with a suite of standard features including a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, and power sunshades for the rear passengers. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque.

    The G90 will also be offered with a 48-volt hybrid system that adds an electric supercharger that boosts the V-6’s output to 409 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. This version of the G90 will start at $99,795, and adds extra content including an air suspension, rear-wheel steering, power cooled and massaging rear seats, and 21-inch wheels.

    The new G90 is significantly more expensive than the 2022 model. It started at just $76,045 for the 3.3T Premium, which used a 365-hp twin-turbo V-6. The previous model also offered a 420-hp 5.0-liter V-8 for just $79,795, but all 2023 G90s come powered by six cylinders. The new pricing structure makes the G90 more costly than a base 2023 Audi A8, which goes for $87,595, but it’s still cheaper than the 2023 BMW 740i, at $94,295, and looks like a steal next to the $112,150 2022 Mercedes-Benz S500.

    The first deliveries of the 2023 Genesis G90 are expected to begin by the middle of August.

Gas Prices Currently Dropping at Fastest Rate in over a Decade


  • Gas prices are falling at the fastest rate in over a decade, according to a tweet by President Joe Biden.
  • After a gallon of regular gas peaked above $5 in June, today the average price is $4.19, per AAA.
  • There are currently 19 states where the average is under $4 per gallon, and it’s $3.77 or less in eight states.

    Gas prices have been extremely volatile this year, with the national average peaking above $5 per gallon in June. However, prices have now fallen for the past seven weeks straight, according to data collected by Gas Buddy.

    President Joe Biden today tweeted that the current drop in gas prices is the fastest decline the country has seen in over a decade. The highest recorded average price of a gallon of regular was $5.02 in mid-June, per AAA, which today lists the national average at $4.19 per gallon. That’s a difference of 83 cents.

    While a gallon of regular still exceeds $5 on average in states such as Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Nevada, there are 19 states where a gallon is offered for under $4. Again, that’s according to AAA’s list of state gas-price averages, which also lists eight states where drivers can fill up for an average of $3.77 or less. The cheapest of those is Texas, where regular is currently $3.69 per gallon on average.

    AAA yesterday issued a report on the falling gas prices, including a chart that compares national gas prices between 2019 and 2022. It also pointed out that these lower prices could lead to increased demand, which could stymie the price drop.

    “We know that most American drivers have made significant changes in their driving habits to cope with high gas prices,” said AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross. “But with gas below $4 a gallon at nearly half of the gas stations around the country, it’s possible that gas demand could rise.”

    It’s clear that there’s been a steady decline in recent weeks, but—as we explained in an in-depth article on gas-price trends last month—it’s best to be prepared for the unpredictable.

2023 GMC Canyon Teased in AT4X Off-Road Trim Ahead of Debut


  • The 2023 GMC Canyon will debut on August 11, with GMC providing a teaser for the new midsize pickup truck ahead of its reveal.
  • The teaser shows a Canyon AT4X with the Edition 1 package, and the trim level appears to include beefy bodywork and a tough-looking front bumper with a bull bar.

    Last week, Chevrolet took the wraps off the new 2023 Colorado, showing a butch new design that will be available exclusively with four doors and a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder. Now, we are getting a peek at its corporate cousin, with GMC showing a teaser for the 2023 Canyon and announcing that the mid-size pickup truck will be revealed in full on August 11.

    The teaser image shows half of the new Canyon’s front end, and GMC says that this example is the AT4X model with the Edition 1 package. The AT4X trim, first introduced on the GMC Sierra, will be the most off-road-ready variant in the range, and we can see a chunky front bumper with a large bull bar rising up in front of the grille. The headlights appear to be split into two pieces, with the rectangular upper section consisting of LED daytime running lights and the lower trapezoidal section featuring the main headlights.

    The grille is blacked out, and it appears that auxiliary fog lights sit in the middle of the front bumper. The 2023 Canyon AT4X also looks to ride on capable all-terrain tires. We expect the Canyon to adopt the same turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain and cab configuration as the Colorado, and the Canyon should also come in a luxurious Denali trim.

    Check back for more information on the 2023 Canyon when all is revealed on August 11. GMC says reservations will open for the AT4X with Edition 1 package when it is unveiled.

2023 BMW X2 Review, Pricing, and Specs


Overview

Although underneath it’s nothing more than a previous-generation BMW X1 SUV, the 2023 X2 exudes a style all its own. The X2’s interior is snug and less practical than the X1’s, and rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLB-class and the Volvo XC40 also offer more space for cargo and passengers. But the X2 is more fun loving than those SUVs. All X2 models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 228 horsepower, which is enough power to push the X2 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. Handling is sharp and the X2 has the kind of attitude that is tailor-made for driving enthusiasts.

What’s New for 2023?

BMW has introduced the Edition Goldplay appearance package on sDrive28i and xDrive28i models of the X2 for 2023. This special-edition trim comes with the M Sport package, which includes a sport-tuned suspension with a lower ride height as well as a returned steering system, but the big difference is in the exterior styling. GoldPlay models are distinguished from other X2s with a more aggressive front end design and gold exterior trim accents. The X2 Edition GoldPlay is available with your choice of San Remo Green, Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Storm Bay, or Skyscraper Grey paint. Elsewhere in the lineup, the X2’s M Sport package gets a new 19-inch wheel design and heated front seats and heated steering wheel become standalone options. The performance-oriented M35i model has been discontinued.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Most buyers will find the front-wheel drive sDrive28i model to be perfectly suitable, although we’d like to point out that the boxier X1 is more practical and received an overhaul this year that brings more modern features.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The X2 is powered by a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder and comes exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and BMW calls this model the sDrive28i. If you want all-wheel drive, you’ll need to shell out $2000 more for the xDrive28i, which is powered by the same turbo four. The engine is a sweetheart: eager to rev, silky smooth, and plenty gutsy. At our test track, the X2 xDrive28i snapped off a decent 6.4-second run to 60 mph—0.1 second slower than the Volvo XC40 T5. The X2 has a harsh ride, especially with the optional sport suspension. When going over rough stretches of road, occupants will feel every imperfection in their seats. The trade-off is a high level of agility. The X2 is a joy to pitch into fast corners and rewards the driver with its predictable nature.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The X2 doesn’t boast the highest fuel-economy ratings in its segment, but it’s still plenty efficient. Front-drive models should see up to 32 mpg on the highway, and all-wheel-drive X2s, up to 31 mpg. In our testing, though, the X2 outdid itself, with a 36-mpg result over our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route. For more information about the X2’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

While the X2’s interior design isn’t as expressive as its exterior, the cabin is nicely outfitted and well built. The driving position is great, and all the X2’s controls are within reach of the driver. Rear-seat headroom is tight, but passenger space should be acceptable for most people. BMW offers both faux and genuine leather in several colors. Because of its shapelier backside, the X2 isn’t as practical as the squared-off X1, but it’s in line with raked-roofed rivals. We fit five carry-on suitcases behind the rear seat and 15 with the bench folded; the X1 managed seven and 19, respectively.

Infotainment and Connectivity

An 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation is standard and runs BMW’s intuitive iDrive software. BMW also provides a controller knob on the center console, if you’re touchscreen averse. The Premium package adds a head-up display. Apple CarPlay capability is standard, but Android Auto is not offered. The included seven-speaker audio system will be good enough for casual listeners, but audiophiles can spec a Harman/Kardon premium sound system for more coin.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A basic set of driver-assistance features, including automated emergency braking, comes standard, and BMW offers additional tech for a price. Fine Print of Chevy Bolt Rebate Waives Owners’ Right to Sue

  • All Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt EUV vehicles were recalled in 2021 because of battery fire risk, following nearly a year of smaller related recalls.
  • After the recall, GM cut prices on the Bolts for the 2023 model year, and announced that customers who’d bought their vehicles earlier were eligible for a refund.
  • On August 2, Jalopnik showed a screen shot of the rebate form, sent to the website by a Bolt owner, in which they spotted fine print that said the owner must agree to waive their right to sue over their “vehicle(s), the battery defect, or the battery recalls.”

    The saga of the Bolt EV and EUV has been dramatic in the past year. First, there were sweeping battery fire recalls, and then production was halted, and then there was a hefty price cut with refunds for owners who’d bought before the announcement, bringing the EVs’ starting price under $30,000. Now it appears—and the automaker has confirmed to Car and Driver—that Chevrolet is offering the refund on the condition that owners waive their right to sue GM over their vehicle, battery defects, or battery recalls.

    The report comes from an unnamed source cited in an article on the Jalopnik website, published Tuesday morning. The source, described as a Bolt owner, claims they had to agree to fine print with that stipulation in order to claim their refund.

    The article includes a screenshot of the release the source had to click to agree to before finalizing the reimbursement. The exact language, with certain parts bolded for emphasis, is as follows:

    By nonetheless agreeing to this Release, I—both on my own behalf and on behalf of my heirs, agents, servants, beneficiaries, legal representatives, assigns, wards, executors, successors, and administrators—forever waive and release all claims, damages, or causes of action, either known or unknown, regardless of the legal or equitable theory, that I may have now or in the future arising out of or in any way relating to my Bolt vehicle(s), the battery defect, or the battery recalls, and including any claims or rights that I may have in connection with the class action, including any right to participate as a class member. This release is in favor of and includes General Motors Company, General Motors LLC, General Motors Holdings LLC, LG Chem, Ltd., LG Energy Solution, Ltd., LG Energy Solution Michigan Inc., LG Electronics, Inc., and LG Electronics USA, Inc. as well as all of their respective officers, directors, agents, employees, servants, subsidiaries, affiliated companies, subsidiaries, parent companies, insurers, authorized dealers, suppliers, divisions, predecessors, successors, heirs, and assigns.

    Car and Driver reached out to GM for comment, and Kevin Kelly, senior director of Chevrolet Communications, confirmed to us that the above language is in the reimbursement agreement.

    The History

    In November 2020, Chevy recalled all 2017–2018 model Bolts and select 2019 models totaling 50,932 vehicles. The recall followed an investigation by the NHTSA into three reports of fires, including one which reported smoke inhalation injuries. NHTSA then issued a consumer alert warning Bolt owners of five known fires, including two injuries and one incidence of fire spreading to a home. The alert recommended Bolt owners park their vehicle outside away from buildings, and a series of temporary remedies were recommended.

    More Bolt EVs, and eventually the Bolt EUV, were recalled until the NHTSA announced in August 2021 that every 2017–2022 model year Bolt and Bolt EUV ever produced and sold was under recall, including vehicles that had previously received a remedy. This affected more than 141,000 vehicles.

    GM committed to replacing every defective battery pack, and though it identified two potential manufacturing defects, GM held off on replacing battery packs until it could be sure that the new packs wouldn’t be defective.

    The company also halted production on new Bolts and Bolt EUVs, having already halted production of new batteries. However, slowly but surely, GM began the process of replacing defective batteries, with production of batteries resuming in late 2021 and production of Bolts resuming in April 2022.

    Meanwhile, prices had been cut for the 2022 model year, and, after production resumed, the Bolt EV and EUV got an additional price cut for 2023 of around $6000, announced in June. Both models now retail for under $30,000. Automotive News also noted that same month that owners who had purchased a Bolt EV earlier in 2022 would receive retroactive refunds totaling the price cut.

    It’s worthwhile noting that the fine print of the agreement doesn’t say anything about your ability to file insurance claims. Equally important, GM is still legally required to provide no-cost repairs for any future recalls. That means if the Bolt you bought is eligible for a battery pack replacement, you can still get one. And, as always, owners can check the NHTSA recall site for more information and updates on their vehicle’s recall status.

2023 Mazda CX-50’s Meridian Edition Off-Road Package Detailed


  • Mazda has announced details on the CX-50’s rugged-looking Meridian Edition package.

    When Mazda initially revealed the 2023 CX-50, it showed photos of the new compact crossover with all sorts of off-road accessories and special graphics. As it turns out, these extras are part of a package called the Meridian Edition, which costs $2800 on top of the 2.5 Turbo model and offers a few additional customization options.

    The CX-50 Meridian Edition comes in two colors—Zircon Sand or Polymetal Gray metallic—and has a Terracotta brown interior. The main upgrade is the set of 18-inch wheels and Falken all-terrain tires, and appearance upgrades include a different headlight surround, rocker panels, and a graphic on the hood. There are no changes to the suspension or the all-wheel-drive system, and the Meridian Edition has the same 256-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four as other CX-50 2.5 Turbo models.

    There’s also an Apex package available that adds roof-rack crossbars, a roof platform, splash guards, and a different hood graphic. It costs $1235 extra. All in, a CX-50 Meridian Edition will run $42,460.

    For those who want to add similar style to non-Meridian Edition versions of the CX-50, there’s an $1899 bundle of dealer-installed accessories called the Meridian Choice package. It has the same hood graphic, roof rack, roof platform, and some appearance tweaks from the Meridian edition.

    Otherwise, all 2023 Mazda CX-50 models receive a mid-year price increase of $750, meaning that it now carries a base price of $28,825 with the standard naturally aspirated engine.

2023 Ford Maverick Prepares to Hit the Trails with Tremor Package

    Ford launched the highly anticipated Maverick last year, providing a new entry point for Ford pickup trucks with the base XL model starting at just $22,490 and coming standard with a hybrid powertrain good for an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway. The Maverick has proved to be a success, finding 13,258 homes in 2021 and racking up an additional 38,753 sales in the first half of 2022. Now Ford is expanding the Maverick lineup for 2023, adding a new Tremor off-road package.

    Available only on the pricier XLT and Lariat trims that are fitted with the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, the Tremor package includes a new all-wheel-drive system with a twin-clutch rear-drive locking differential, which should make the compact pickup more adept off-road by being able to send nearly all rear axle torque to either wheel. The Tremor will feature five drive modes depending on the type of terrain or if the driver is towing, with the Tremor rated to pull 2000 pounds and haul a 1200-pound payload, down 300 pounds from the base Maverick.

    The Maverick Tremor also is equipped with Trail Control, where the truck manages the throttle and brakes to maintain a speed set by the driver while the driver navigates tricky off-road situations. The Tremor receives a one-inch lift and rides on unique front and rear springs and dampers, while upgraded half-shafts and a heavy-duty transmission cooler should improve durability when taking the Tremor away from the pavement.

    Orange accents distinguish the Tremor, with the bright color appearing on the grille, wheels, and front tow hooks. Those tow hooks sit in a redesigned front bumper which features steel skid plates and a provides for a steeper approach angle. There are also blacked-out Ford logos and tinted headlights and taillights, while the 17-inch wheels are finished in a dark gray anodized finish and comes wrapped in all-terrain tires. Inside, the Black Onyx seats feature orange stitching and Tremor logos. Buyers can also spec a Tremor Appearance package which sees the roof and mirror caps painted Carbonized Gray and black graphics applied to the sides and hood.

    The Tremor will cost an additional $2995, with Tremor Appearance package adding an extra $1495 to the bill. These prices will be on top of the base price of a Maverick XLT or Lariat, with the 2022 models starting at $24,835 and $28335, respectively. Production of the 2023 Maverick starts in the fall, with the Tremor becoming available to order in September.
