2023 Honda Ridgeline Review, Pricing, and Specs


Overview

Honda’s mid-size Ridgeline pickup is different. Unlike traditional body-on-frame pickup rivals like the Chevy Colorado or Toyota Tacoma, the Ridgeline is a unibody vehicle—meaning, it has no separate frame. It shares its underpinnings with the unibody three-row Honda Pilot SUV, which is obvious when you drive it. This nontraditional construction gives the Ridgeline the driving comfort of an SUV mixed with the towing and cargo bed of a smaller truck. While this diminishes its off-road capability compared to the most aggressive models from its competitors, the Ridgeline makes an excellent impression in the concrete jungle. Offered exclusively as a four-door crew cab with a five-foot bed, the Ridgeline is powered by a pleasant 280-horsepower V-6 with a nine-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard. This segment of mid-size trucks has become oversaturated with traditional body-on-frame pickups that provide ample towing and capable off-roading. However, the Ridgeline caters to folks who want a more comfortable and fuel-efficient alternative. While the priciest models have the fanciest features, we think the RTL has the best mix of desirable equipment and value. Likewise, the Ridgeline RTL receives better standard features than the lesser Sport trim level. These include heated front seats, a leather-trimmed interior, and power-adjustable front seats.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The lone powertrain is a 280-hp 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 262 pound-feet of torque and hooks up to a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The engine feels smooth, and throttle response is especially receptive when you call for hard acceleration. An untraditional pickup in many ways, the Ridgeline surprises from behind the wheel. On the road, it is well-mannered and feels extremely competent. Its coil-sprung independent rear suspension contributes to a carlike ride quality not available with the leaf-sprung, solid-axle setups used by the competition. Body lean in corners is minimal, and small bumps are barely noticeable. The electrically assisted steering feels appropriate. The Ridgeline’s braking performance stands out as its lone dynamic blemish. Its braking distance from 70 mph to zero is on the long side, and we thought the brake pedal felt soft and had too much travel during normal use.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Honda Ridgeline pickup is a show-er, but not much of a tow-er. All Ridgelines come standard with all-wheel drive and are rated at 5000 pounds, which is between 2000 and 2500 less than rivals such as the Chevy Colorado and Ford Ranger. The Ridgeline is capable of hauling almost 1600 pounds of payload, which is about on track with the Colorado but less than the Ranger’s maximum.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Ridgeline’s engine is the most fuel-efficient V-6 in its class at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. On our 75-mph fuel-economy route, which simulates real-world highway driving and is part of our extensive testing regimen, an all-wheel-drive Ridgeline earned 28 mpg. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Ridgeline’s interior is tops in its class in terms of practicality and comfort. As with most other mid-size pickups, the Honda features hard plastics below the dash level. Otherwise, the materials are above average. Rear-seat passengers will enjoy the most space of all mid-size rivals. Fold-down armrests on both front seats are a welcome addition, especially since the center console sits low between them. The Honda pickup has only one bed length, 5.3 feet, which lines up with competitors’ short beds and has the second-lowest volume at 34 cubic feet. The antidote to this disparity is its locking, weather-tight in-bed trunk, which is located below the bed’s floor and accessed from above. It has a 7.3-cubic-foot capacity. There’s one more advantage: with 50.0 inches between its bed’s wheel wells, the Ridgeline is the only mid-size pickup that can fit a sheet of four-by-eight-foot building material flat on the bed floor. Clever features continue inside. The rear seat splits 60/40 and, when flipped up, provides room to fit a full-size bicycle. Unfortunately, loading large items may be difficult, as the rear doors don’t open very wide.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Ridgeline comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It now features a physical volume knob and screen icons that Honda says are easier to use than its predecessor was. However, we haven’t had a chance to test this claim or the updated Display Audio system for ourselves. The Ridgeline also comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, certain models can be equipped with an in-bed audio system that can liven up any tailgate party. Using actuators that vibrate, it turns the cargo bed into a huge speaker.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Honda pickup truck also includes a host of standard driver-assistance technology. ‘Pimp My Ride’ Coming Back, and Here’s How to Watch It on YouTube


If you were an automotive enthusiast during the mid-2000s, you are certainly familiar with the crew at West Coast Customs. The shop was the home of MTV’s iconic TV show Pimp My Ride, which ran for 73 episodes here in the States. The show proved so popular that a number of international versions quickly hit global airways. After more than a decade since it last aired, the United Kingdom is finally about to get another crack at the Pimp My Ride universe thanks to a little help from a team at eBay.

Pimp My Ride UK initially debuted in June 2005 and ran for just three seasons before ultimately being pulled. English DJ Tim Westwood was the original host, while the modification and restoration work was completed by the team at Carisma Automotive. Now, though, British rapper Lady Leshurr, who is best known for her Queen’s Speech series of freestyles, is going to take a crack at reviving the project. Hosted on the MTV YouTube channel and bankrolled by eBay, the show will return as an internet property on August 19.

One of the first vehicles the team is slated to work on is a Mitsubishi GT, which Top Gear reports will wear some Fast and Furious–inspired tweaks. That’s only fitting considering the two franchises have similar career timelines. The work is slated to take place at the Wrench Studios, which is a high-performance tuning shop located in Ashford, England. Based on the high-horsepower builds that have been featured on the shop’s own YouTube page, the pairing seems perfect for this sort of endeavor.

Pimp My Ride has had an interesting cultural history. Here Are the Most Frequently Stolen Cars and Trucks of 2021


  • The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has released its car theft data from 2021, showing that the rate of stolen cars was up 8 percent from 2020.
  • Full-size pickup trucks were the most commonly stolen vehicles, with Chevrolet ousting Ford for the top spot in thefts for 2021, while economy sedans like Honda’s Civic and Toyota’s Camry trailed close behind.

    With record demand and strained supply chains, the automotive market is in a period of severe fluctuation. Manufacturers can’t produce enough cars to meet the demand from dealerships, with cars being sold before they even reach the dealer. With new cars sparsely produced and often sold above sticker prices, consumers fled to the used-vehicle market, where things haven’t been much better in terms of options or price. This has led to a scarcity of choices for car buyers, but not necessarily for car thieves.

    Thanks to data collected by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), we can see how this lack of supply has affected the world of automotive thieving. The results were a modest increase in theft, rising 8 percent year over year for 2021. However, the theft trends from 2021 included a major change to the cast of usual targets.

    Ranking at the top of the list were Chevrolet full-size pickup trucks, with 48,206 trucks stolen last year. Ford came in number two, a major change from two years of being on top, with 47,999 full-size trucks stolen in 2021. Trucks are particularly popular with thieves, in part because of their roadgoing ubiquity. NICB data notes that the most commonly stolen year of Chevrolet and Ford trucks were 2004 and 2007, respectively.

    Model year seems to play a big role in the kinds of cars stolen. Honda products from the late 1990s and early 2000s were notorious for being stolen, and the trend continues two decades later. Honda’s Civic and Accord took third and fourth places on the list, with the most commonly stolen Civic being from the 2000 model year. The Accord falls even further behind, with 1997 being the most common model year stolen. Around 61,000 of these family sedans were stolen in total last year.

    Other predictable models were included in the list, including the Toyota Camry and Corolla as well as the Nissan Altima and Honda CR-V. Beyond the usual suspects, there is a new addition to the list, an SUV that was stolen at high rates in 2021: Jeep’s Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models. The rugged SUV was stolen 13,210 times across the nation.

    A deeper dive into the NICB database of common vehicle thefts by state reveals some telling trends. True to home, the top 10 most stolen vehicles in Michigan were all domestically made, with the Dodge Charger topping the list at 1148 units sold. Oregon stayed true to its granola roots, with the average year of the most stolen vehicles being 1998 and three of the 10 most stolen cars listed as aging Subarus. Smaller, less populous states like Vermont and New Hampshire had significantly fewer grand theft autos, with the most stolen vehicles being 16 Subaru Foresters and 44 Ford trucks, respectively.

    The NICB does have some recommendations to help rightful car owners keep their vehicles. Reporting the vehicle as stolen right away is the most important part, and even then your chances are somewhat slim. Data from 2021 shows a 34% recovery rate if the stolen vehicle was reported in the first 24 hours. Other common-sense recommendations include parking in well-lit areas and removing valuables from plain sight.

    If you own one of the cars listed, don’t panic. It’s not a coincidence that the most commonly stolen vehicles are also the most sold. Ford sold 726,004 F-series pickup trucks last year, while Honda sold 263,787 Civics. More than 10.5 million Honda Accords have been produced since the model’s inception. All of that is to say common sense practices and an extra layer of protection (steering wheel club, immobilizer, etc.) for the more susceptible models should keep your car wherever you park it.

A full-size sedan doesn’t have to be uninteresting to look at and boring to drive, especially when it’s the 2022 Nissan Maxima. Its sharply styled exterior wraps around a spacious cabin that pushes the idea of mainstream fairly close to the luxury realm. Drivers who like some fun behind the wheel will find it with the Maxima, although expectations should be set well below the sports-car benchmark. 2023 Nissan Maxima Review, Pricing, and Specs


Overview

Although it hasn’t been restyled since the 2016 model year, the 2023 Nissan Maxima’s exterior still turns heads thanks to its floating roofline and swoopy profile. Too bad its road manners aren’t nearly as interesting. The Maxima feels more nimble than the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger but it’s not as refined as the Volkswagen Arteon. All Maximas come with a V-6 engine that pumps out 300 horsepower, but it’s mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that’s a buzzkill. The Nissan’s cabin is spacious and surprisingly upscale for the price, so if you’re looking for a lower-cost alternative to something from, say, Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brand, it’s worth a look. Otherwise, we’d gravitate to the Arteon or other smaller sports-sedan offerings from Audi or BMW, which have a similar price tag.

What’s New for 2023?

What’s new is that the end is nigh for the Maxima. Nissan has announced that 2023 will the Maxima’s final model year. The Maxima has served as the flagship sedan of the Nissan brand since 1980 but recent generations failed to live up to the sporty image established by earlier models—cars that impressed Car and Driver editors in the 1990s. We suspect that Nissan won’t retire the Maxima nameplate altogether as the company shifts its focus to electric vehicles and SUVs. The Maxima could be reborn as a pseudo-crossover in the same vein as the Toyota Crown or its name could be applied to a future electric sedan—a reincarnation of the Maxima as an EV with sports-sedan attitude.

Ford, GM Raise Truck Prices as They Fight Dealers’ Price Gouging

  • Ford is dropping the 2023 F-150’s base 100A package and making the 101A equipment package standard, raising the lowest XL trim’s base price. Higher trim levels also see big price increases due to similar equipment changes.
  • The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 has also seen three price increases this year, according to a report from GM Authority.
  • These MSRP increases cause headaches for shoppers in an inflationary marketplace; meanwhile, the manufacturers are publicly battling their dealerships over price gouging on popular models.

    While Ford and GM are hard at work clamping down on dealers price gouging on popular models, both companies are actively upping the prices of their most popular trucks, the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500. MSRPs, or manufacturer suggested retail prices, for both models have been steadily rising beyond what’s common for typical model-year adjustments.

    For 2023, the least expensive F-150 you can buy is $35,880, while the cheapest Silverado is $35,845; for the 2021 model year, the cheapest F-150 was $30,895 and a base Silverado was available for less than $30,000. Between 2018 and 2021, the base price of the F-150 increased by an average of $593. Since then, the F-150’s base price has gone up over $2000 for each of the last two years.

    The increases are not just for the cheapest models, either. Higher-end F-150 models such as the Raptor and the Limited are up as well. The Raptor’s base price will increase by $5220 for 2023, with the Limited going up $6285. The price for our preferred trim, the Lariat, swells $7580 from 2022 to the 2023 model year. Much like the Fords, the top-end Chevys are getting big bumps. The Silverado High Country will go up $4250 while the off-road ZR2 is increasing by $4800.

    There are a variety of reasons for these price jumps. Ford confirmed to C/D that it is dropping the lowest equipment group available for a number of the trucks available in the 2023 F-150 range, as first reported by Ford Authority. The XL’s 100A package is gone, with the 101A equipment package now serving as the base for this lowest trim level, commanding a $1815 premium. Admittedly, the standard 100A package was remarkably stripped-out, as 101A includes basic features such as power windows, power door locks, keyless entry, cruise control, and a reverse sensing system. Equipment changes are applied to other models, too, with the Lariat dropping 500A in favor of 501A and the Raptor dropping 800A in favor of 801A. This means that previously optional equipment is now standard, such as an upgraded audio system, additional USB ports, and other extras.

    For Chevy’s part, the Silverado’s price bumps can be partially explained by its facelift for 2022. All trim levels feature a redesigned front end for 2022, while the LT and up models get a redesigned interior. The Silverado’s 4.3-liter V-6 engine was also dropped from the lineup for the 2022 model year, leaving the costlier turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four as the base engine.

    The Silverado’s destination charge also increased by $100, and Chevy has applied several mid-year price increases for the Silverado throughout the 2022 model year. According to GM Authority, all trims saw price increases of between $800 and $1200 earlier this year, and then another $1300 was added to every model more recently. Looking ahead to the 2023 model entering production later this month, the Silverado’s base price will increase a further $1000.

    With chip shortages, supply chain issues, and rising inflation plaguing manufacturers, it’s not exactly a surprise to see rising prices for any consumer product these days. But these rapidly rising MSRPs cast the automakers’ public pricing disputes with dealerships in a different light. Either way, buyers are still the ones dealt the hardest blow.

23,000 Ferraris Recalled for Potential Brake Failure


  • Ferrari has recalled 23,555 vehicles for potentially leaking brake fluid, which could lead to partial or complete loss of braking ability.

    Ferrari has recalled 23,555 vehicles from the 2005 model year to 2022. The scope of vehicles affected represents a sizable portion of Ferraris produced since 2005.

    A similar recall detailing brake failure risk was issued in October 2021, and it affected certain 2010–2015 Ferrari 458s and 2016–2019 Ferrari 488s, totaling nearly 10,000 vehicles. However, those models are not included in this recall.

    The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filings indicate a problem with the brake fluid reservoir cap of affected vehicles, where it fails to vent properly, creating a vacuum in the reservoir which can cause brake fluid to leak. If enough fluid leaks, the car could lose partial or complete braking ability, which is dangerous for the driver.

    The remedy stated in the documents involves replacing the reservoir cap with a modified version that should vent properly, as well as installing software to provide an alternate warning should brake fluid levels still reach dangerous levels. Dealers and owners will be notified on September 24.

    In the meantime, owners should pay attention to any brake or brake fluid warnings, and in the event of a warning, pull over and wait for Ferrari Roadside Assistance to tow the vehicle to the nearest dealer. As always, owners can check the NHTSA recalls site to see if their car is affected.

Toyota Offers Buyback of bZ4X EVs with Wheels That Might Fall Off


  • Toyota announced a recall for the bZ4X electric vehicle in June, acknowledging that wheels might detach from the car because of malfunctioning hub bolts and asking customers to stop driving the vehicle.
  • The automaker had been offering free loaners to affected bZ4X owners, but the deal has now been increased with more sweeteners as well as a new offer: Toyota will buy back the bZ4X outright.
  • Only 258 bZ4X EVs were sold before the recall was announced, but the vehicle has an outsize role to play in Toyota’s slow embrace of all-electric vehicles.

    When Toyota first announced a recall for its new, electric bZ4X SUV, it said that the hub bolts used on the wheels might loosen “to the point where the wheel can detach from the vehicle.” That was a noticeable black eye for one of the world’s largest automakers launching a crucial new launch.

    The bZ4X is Toyota’s first all-electric vehicle since the company worked with Tesla on the RAV4 EV around a decade ago. The RAV4 EV was discontinued in 2014, and Toyota has been on the outside looking in when it comes to EV sales ever since. The bZ4X is expected to change things.

    The recall was announced after Toyota sold 258 units. Toyota’s first offer for buyers was to have local dealers give them a loaner vehicle free of charge until a remedy could be found for keeping the hub bolts connected. “The cause of the issue and the driving patterns under which this issue could occur are still under investigation,” Toyota said in June.

    After a few months of research, Toyota has now sent a letter to bZ4X owners (and then posted it to Reddit) expanding the benefits it is offering, including a complete buyback. For starters, bZ4X owners can continue to drive a loaner vehicle while the dealer stores their EV at no cost to the driver. Toyota will pay for the fuel used in these loaner vehicles and will also offer buyers $5000 toward their lease payments or as a check if the EV was purchased outright. Toyota is also extending the time frame for bZ4X drivers to get complimentary charging at EVgo stations and is extending the warranty period.

    If all of that’s not enough for you, then Toyota will buy back your bZ4X, although the details might vary depending on the situation. Toyota has not said how it will handle any dealer markups originally applied to the purchase price, for example, but the fact that it’s offering to completely take back a brand-new EV over something as seemingly routine as hub bolts is notable. Toyota has also issued a recall for the 2022 Tundra because of a problem with the nuts on the rear axle assembly that can loosen over time.

    The bZ4X recall also includes 403 units of the 2023 Subaru Solterra, which shares the Toyota’s platform, although documents filled with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) state that none of those have gone out to dealers or customers yet.

    Problems with selling new units of the bZ4X could hit Toyota extra hard because any EVs purchased from the automaker after September 30 are not eligible for the full federal tax credits under current law. While the rules are likely to change under the Inflation Reduction Act, as it stands now, Toyota is running out of time to offer its buyers a $7500 credit if they can’t buy a new bZ4X any time soon.

    In the meantime, owners of this EV who want to keep abreast of the situation can check the NHTSA recalls website for updates.

If I had two tickets to paradise—hell, if I even had one—I’d want something cool to cruise around in. While cool might suggest something exotic like the red Ferrari 308GTS that Tom Selleck used to race around Hawaii in Magnum P.I., I’m actually thinking of something equally Italian, albeit infinitely more leisurely. Enter this 1971 Fiat 500F Jolly conversion that’s currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos.

If you’ve never heard of a Fiat 500 Jolly before, join the club. I’ve probably seen the quirky cruiser in some movie or another, but the first time I realized what I was looking at was today when I scrolled upon this example on the BaT website. I was instantly struck by its tan-tasseled canopy, tiny whitewall tires, and jolly orange paint that perfectly encapsulates its namesake. A quick Wikipedia read-through taught me that the original Jolly versions of the Fiat 500 were custom-built by the Ghia design house. History!

The one that’s up for auction in these photos isn’t a real Jolly, though, it’s a clone based on what was once an ordinary ’71 500F. While collectors will obviously care about that, I couldn’t care less. I just want to buy it and have the seller ship it from its current home in Italy to someplace warm and tropical where I can immediately retire and spend the rest of my days putzing around paradise.

Sure, this Jolly won’t get me anywhere in a hurry, not with its half-liter two-pot engine that likely has fewer horses than most farm stables, but that’s fine because I’d have nothing but time. I could also keep my left leg in shape by exercising its third pedal, but I can’t imagine going so fast that I’d ever need to reach top gear with its four-speed. Although it’d be interesting to see what would happen if it did go 120 km/h (about 75 mph), the peak indicated by its speedo. With its super light curb weight and big cloth top, could this Jolly Fiat turn into a flying Fiat? It’s probably best if no one finds out.

My biggest complaint is that I don’t see any beverage holders inside the buggy. Where am I supposed to secure my piña colada (non-alcoholic, obviously)? I guess I’ll just have to hold the glass between my legs while I sit on the Jolly’s wicker furniture that replaces traditional seats. I won’t lie, they’re my favorite feature. However, I’d be fibbing if I said they look comfortable. Chalk up another reason to keep this thing at a golf-cart-safe pace.

With six days left to go before the auction ends on Thursday, August 11, this jolly-looking Fiat 500F currently has a high bid of $15,000. I would love one for myself, but that love is mostly dependent on the location I get to drive it in. A wonderful vacation vehicle? Definitely. As primary transportation in southeastern Michigan? Not so much.
